Case Summary

Isaac Clark appealed to the Justice of the Peace in St. Clair County for a debt of $176 owed him by Joseph Cornelius. The Justice of the Peace found in favor of Clark, to which Cornelius appealed to the St. Clair County Circuit Court. The Circuit Court decided the Justice of the Peace had no jurisdiction and dismissed the case. Clark then appealed to the Supreme Court who affirmed the Circuit Court's decision as the Justice of the Peace can not hear cases in amounts exceeding $100.
